In August, the Video Club’s TV shows introduce a local senior speed dating program and a new historical novel. “Beyond the Gates” visits the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center in Mission Viejo where speed dating is among many senior activities. “Eyes on Books” welcomes best-selling novelist Christina Baker Kline via Zoom to discuss The Exiles, her tale of three British women committed to an Australian penal colony during the 1840s.

The Murray Center’s Melanie McGrane, Community Services Supervisor, explains how their senior speed dating program works – enabling “15 eligible bachelors and 15 bachelorettes” to exchange introductions “in a positive and safe space.” Interviewing McGrane is local personality Cherri Farah. Other senior programs discussed include catered luncheons; classes in fitness, gardening, and technology; a Tuesday-evening acoustic concert series – and flu-shot clinics, coming in September.
Next, with Farah hosting, “Beyond the Gates” examines the philanthropy of Orange County’s Roosters Foundation, which raises $300,000 annually for children’s charities. Finally, resident Bill Hemberger visits Piccolino Ristorante, a popular Italian eatery in Mission Viejo. BTG airs Wednesdays at 11 am and Sundays at 9 am over Village Television.
