Video Club Mourns the Passing of John Kelly

John Kelly, who served as the Video Club’s External Video Coordinator for many years and was deeply involved in producing our Short Dramatic Films series, passed away from natural causes on June 14, 2024 at age 72. A “Celebration of Life” will be held for family only, according to his wife, Alexandra Scott-Kelly, who is also active in the club.

Born in Australia, John held a bachelor’s degree in economics and worked in the computer industry in Australia, later moving to the United States. He and Alexandra (born in Germany) operated a video production business in Newport Beach, which had been started by Alexandra in 1984. John joined the company in 1985, and the couple was married in 1989 (“A good career move,” John was fond of observing).

Together they operated Scott Video Productions for over 30 years, shooting videos for over 2,000 clients with budgets ranging from $500 to $500,000 and winning two major national non-broadcast awards, a Telly in 1993 and a Caples in 2000, along with other video awards.

The couple moved to Laguna Woods Village in 2016 and became active in the Video Club, with special interest in Video One Productions, where John frequently worked behind the camera on shoots for club-produced TV shows. His work as the club’s External Video Coordinator had him interacting with residents and clubs when they requested video services.

As one of the founders of the club’s Short Dramatic Films series, John directed the first film, “Write It Down” (2019); the second film, “What, You, Too?” (2021), and the fifth film, “Seeking Online Adventures” (2024). He served as producer on the third film, “The Hole in One” (2022) and director of photography on the fourth film, “Bowling Ball Debacle” (2023).
