Charles Higginson (left), who served as the Video Club President in 2012, peacefully passed away in San Clemente, California on July 1, 2024, surrounded by his children and several grandchildren. A devoted father and grandfather, he was an excellent gift giver, poem writer, friend, engineer, and loving husband to his late wife, Pat, who was also a Video Club member.
In his early years Charles loved dancing and became known as the King of the Rumba Beat. He also loved astronomy, surfing, racquetball, traveling, model airplanes, jigsaw puzzles, and was an expert at Sudoku. Affectionately known to his family and friends as Chuck, Chas O, or Laddie, he was born on July 19, 1932, in Nampa, Idaho to W.S. and Sarah Ella Higginson. His father’s work as a Topographical Engineer had the family moving quite often all over the United States, a total of 15 times.
Charles graduated high school in 1950 from Washington Lee High in Washington, DC and attended George Washington University where he graduated in Civil Engineering in 1954. That same year he was called to serve a 2.5 year mission for the Mormon Church in Argentina. In 1956 was called to help open a new Mission in Chile and was the 5th Elder to enter the country. Upon his return from serving his mission, he was assigned to Long Beach to begin his enlisted service in the U.S. Navy. Using his college degree, he applied for Officer’s School and was immediately accepted. He was sent to Officer’s Training School in New Jersey and after graduation was sent back to the Long Beach Naval Depot and there spent his full tour of duty.
It was in Long Beach that he met Patricia Cranney, and on April 19, 1962 they were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. They soon moved to Pasadena and began their family, adopting two boys. In late 1965, they moved to Huntington Beach and later adopted two girls to complete their family. In 1972, they moved to Mesa, AZ where they raised their children. After retirement, the couple moved to Laguna Woods Village where they spent the remainder of their lives, near the ocean, which they both loved.
