Screenwriting Is Topic of October 15 General Meeting

Dr. Mike Gonzales, screenwriter, director, and Cinema and Media Arts Professor at Biola University in La Mirada, will explain “How to Write A Story That Others Will Want to Hear” as our General Meeting speaker via Zoom on Thursday, October 15, at 7 pm.

Describing filmmaking as a “collaborative and creative process,” Prof. Gonzales specializes in teaching screenwriting and directing. He has sold three scripts and optioned two, with his first script, Black Eagle, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. An award-winning commercial film director, he has directed national commercials, produced corporate videos, and consulted with studio executives.

His Ph.D. is from the Cook School of Intercultural Studies at Biola University. Before coming to Biola, he taught at the USC School of Cinema for 10 years and earned a Master of Professional Writing degree from USC. He also taught stagecraft and art direction for five years at the Loyola Marymount University School of Communication Arts.

Prof. Gonzales has just completed co-writing two screenplays and is currently authoring a book. He was unit photographer for the Emmy-winning “Surviving an Active Shooter” video in 2016.

As an award-winning commercial film director, he has garnered recognition with numerous Aurora and Telly Awards. His short film, Bravura, was awarded Best Director Short Subject Category at the Sabaoth International Film Festival in Milan, Italy. Bravura also received a prized nomination for best theatrical short or student film at the 20th Annual Imagen Awards held in Beverly Hills. Prof. Gonzales was a 2010 American Doc Showcase film expert invited by the U.S. Department of State to represent the United States in Ecuador with Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Scott Hamilton Kennedy. He is currently a consultant to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Intelligence Bureau and the City of La Verne Police Department.
