President Steve Carman’s 2019 contest to name our award statuette resulted in the name “Goldie,” honoring both our benefactor, the Golden Rain Foundation, and our demographic (“golden oldies”). That’s Steve above admiring a Goldie.
- Get your tickets now for our 10th Annual Goldie Awards Banquet, to be held Saturday, February 1, 2020, in Clubhouse 2 Members attending the banquet will vote to select the winners in our Annual Short Video Contest.
- Our Annual Short Video Contest closes Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 4 pm in the Video Lab. (The deadline of Friday, January 3, was previously announced.) To help members get started, a 3-session class, “Creating Award-Winning Short Videos,” was offered, starting Wednesday, September 18, taught by Lucy Parker and friends.
The familiar travel, family, and activity-focused videos are the mainstay of our contest, according to Betsy Martin (left), Chair of the Video Acceptance Committee (VAC), which oversees the contest. These videos are usually shot with one camera (sometimes a smartphone or tablet) and edited by the entrant. However, in both 2018 and 2019, the top winners were team efforts (in 2018, Lucy V. Parker’s dramatic fantasy video, “The Three Wishes,” and in 2019, June Rose Davis’ documentary tribute to “Magical Aliso Creek”).
“We always want to set our sights higher.” Betsy explained. “At the same time, we always want to welcome and encourage single videographers, especially newcomers.”
Reservations have been coming in for the Banquet. Take a look below at the great food and fun planned for this year — one week before the 92nd Oscars Awards on Sunday, February 9.
Onward and upward! Great things are ahead for 2020.
