President Steve Carman’s 2019 contest to name our award statuette resulted in the name “Goldie,” honoring both our benefactor, the Golden Rain Foundation, and our demographic (“golden oldies”). That’s Steve above admiring a Goldie.
- Save the date – Saturday, February 1, 2020, in Clubhouse 2 – for our 10th Annual Goldie Awards Banquet. Members attending the banquet will vote to select the winners in our Annual Short Video Contest.
- Plan NOW to enter our Annual Short Video Contest, which closes Friday, January 3, 2020, at 4 pm in the Video Lab. To help you get started, check out the 3-session class, “Creating Award-Winning Short Videos,” which begins Wednesday, September 18, taught by Lucy Parker and friends.
This year, for the first time, 4-minute video entries will be accepted in two categories – individually produced and team-produced.
The familiar travel, family, and activity-focused videos are still the mainstay of our contest. These videos are usually shot with one camera (sometimes a smartphone or tablet) and edited by the entrant. However, in both 2018 and 2019, the top winners were team efforts (in 2018, Lucy V. Parker’s dramatic fantasy video, “The Three Wishes,” and in 2019, June Rose Davis’ documentary tribute to “Magical Aliso Creek”).
According to Betsy Martin (left), Chair of the Video Acceptance Committee (VAC), which oversees the contest, the increasing team-based activity of our club’s special interest group, Video One Productions, prompted the category change. “We always want to set our sights higher.” Betsy explained. “At the same time, we always want to welcome and encourage single videographers, especially newcomers.”
Virtually all of the projects undertaken by Video One Productions, require multiple volunteers — i.e., teams. Pre-production activities may involve the producer, director, and others in scriptwriting, casting, and location-scouting. During production, team members operate cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and often the video switcher. Post-production may also require multiple volunteers to complete the editing with titles, music, and more.
Onward and upward! Great things are ahead for 2020.
