In video above, winners of the Video Club of Laguna Woods’ Annual Short Video Contest are interviewed via Zoom by Bill Hemberger and Susan Wheeler. Eight contest entries were screened at the club’s 10th Annual Goldies Awards Banquet on February 3, 2020, in the Clubhouse 2 Main Ballroom. Club members present voted to select the top three winners: Stephanie Brasher, Fred Harshbarger, and Don Hill (see below). All entries are included in this video, produced and edited by Suzanne Savlov with assistance from Tom Nash. Still Banquet photos by Andre Torng. Banquet photo montage by Lucy Parker. The video was scheduled to run on Village Television on September 3 at 6 pm, September 13 at 7 pm,  September 24 at 6 pm, and September 29 at 9:30 am.

IMG_2765a-smRecovering from a big last-minute shock (“You don’t have the ballroom this Saturday — we’ve scheduled a wedding”), Banquet Chair Marsha Berman and her team didn’t lose a beat. They moved the Video Club’s 10th Annual Goldie Awards Banquet from Saturday, February 1, to Monday, February 3, and put on one of our best events ever, attended by more than 80 party-mood guests! Jolanda and her catering crew showed up with elegant appetizers and fabulous rack of lamb. Emcee David Dearing generously delayed a ski trip. And contest winner Fred Harshbarger was especially pleased. He couldn’t come on Saturday.

The snafu occurred because the credit card payment we made last summer for the room never went through. When we “didn’t pay,” the Recreation Department’s system re-assigned the room — and we found out with less than a week’s notice. Word to the wise: when scheduling a room in the Village, make sure you really have it!

Goldie Award winners, by vote of members present,  were Stephanie Brasher (Best of Show), Fred Harshbarger (Excellent), and Don Hill (Outstanding). Stephanie’s video, “Abraham, Martin & John,” is a musical and visual tribute to fallen American heroes. Fred’s video, “Memories,” recalls photographing fall foliage in New England. Don’s video, “Found My Bucket List,” humorously traces his efforts to achieve a long-time goal.
